Specialized Tutoring for Students with Asperger’s Syndrome
Aspies are Awesome!
Wikipedia defines Asperger’s Syndrome as “an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, alongside restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests.
“These behaviors make it extremely difficult for the Asperger’s child to learn in traditional settings as many teachers and school officials lack adequate knowledge of the disorder and how to manage the behaviors.”*
The constellation of characteristics and behaviors affecting students with Asperger’s Syndrome may lead to feelings of isolation and frustration, not wanting to go to school, and, ultimately, giving up on all hopes of academic success…all because they have been labeled as, and therefore begin to believe they are, different!
Sadly, for most kids, with or without Asperger’s Syndrome, a label of being somehow “different” is an entirely negative descriptor!
Asperger’s kids or aspies are different…and they are wonderful!
The Urban Dictionary defines aspies in the following manner: “An aspie is [an individual] who has Asperger’s Syndrome, which is believed to be part of the autism spectrum. Aspies, while being quite gifted verbally (emphasis added), have social, emotional, and sensory integration difficulties, among others. Aspie is an affectionate term, and is not meant as a put down.”
The Urban Dictionary continues, adding a quote:
“My son is an aspie, so he’s not so great at making idle chit chat at parties, or even at being in crowds, but he can get us home from anywhere. He says he just consults the map in his brain.
At Westside Tutoring & Testing Services, the most important lesson we teach all of our students is that being different is a blessing, being different is an asset, and being different is wonderful…wonderful in a very meaningful way.
The lesson we stress is this:
Being different is a gift, a gift they will come to accept and embrace, and a gift that will pay incredible dividends throughout their lives!
It is up to us as parents and educators to reach this wonderfully unique and diverse group of children. We must let them know, in no uncertain terms, that it is okay to be just a little different…or a lot different…because they have a gift.
If you are the parent of a child with Asperger’s Syndrome who is frustrated because your son or daughter is still struggling academically and socially, despite your efforts to work with their teachers and/or other programs, there are alternatives.
Westside Tutoring & Testing Services specializes in tutoring, mentoring, and coaching children with learning difficulties…and we’ve been doing it successfully for more than 3 decades!
There is no quick fix!
Educating and preparing Asperger’s kids for the adult world requires fully-committed parents (we know you know that or you wouldn’t be reading this!) and a long-term partnership with an experienced tutor, a qualified therapist, and, preferably, someone who is a lot of both.
An amazing life is possible for your Aspie!
We have seen it happen. We have helped make it happen. And, we can help make it happen for your child too!
