Individualized Tutoring Programs for Students with NonVerbal Learning Disorder
Research has shown that when we have a conversation with someone and “read” their implied intent or feelings, nearly 65% of that is conveyed to us nonverbally. For the child with a nonverbal learning disorder or NVLD, this is very difficult.
Nonverbal learning disorder is a neurological disorder that limits a child’s abilities to recognize and understand other communication methods such as facial expressions, eye contact, and tone of voice. A child with NVLD is unable to understand moods and true meanings that are often expressed to us in nonverbal ways.
Unfortunately, those with nonverbal learning disorder are often improperly labeled as troublesome, underachievers, and insensitive. The tutors at Westside Tutoring & Testing Services have found this just is not the case! Children with NVLD are often very bright, honest, and hardworking. They just need personalized instruction that is tailored to their unique learning style.
Other behavioral characteristics of the NVLD child often include:
- Awkwardness – extreme difficulty kicking a soccer ball or learning to ride a bike
- Poor fine motor skills – difficulty tying shoe laces, using scissors, or writing
- Incessant talking
- No concept of time
- Doesn’t understand “personal space”
The professional tutors at Westside Tutoring & Testing Services are experienced, caring, and committed to the successful achievements of each and every one of our students, and we specialize in tutoring students diagnosed with learning difficulties.
