The Value of a College Education
Where Do You Go from Here?
I am asked the same question from students and parents alike: Do you think there is still value in a college education?
My answer is always the same: YES!
Let me explain.
You can work for someone else or you can build an empire. You can earn a medical degree and help the poor or you can work on Wall Street and make millions. You can have a wonderful house on the lake or a amazing loft in the city. You can have a big house in the suburbs or a small, cozy cottage on 20 acres in the woods.
The AMERICAN DREAM is NOT Dead
But you MUST believe in it, and you absolutely MUST believe in YOURSELF
Get an education first. Education equals security. Regardless of what you might hear along the way, the only REAL security we have in life is what’s between our ears. No one can take your education away from you; and, because no one can take your education away from you, you will always have options.
We used to live in a time when men and women lived together in “wedded bliss” for 40, 50, even 60 years. He worked for the same company for 40 years and retired with a pension. She stayed at home, raised the kids, and lived for the family. The American Dream was thought to be a house in the suburbs, complete with a white picket fence, three children, two cars, and a dog. If that reality every really existed, it is gone now.
The American Dream has most certainly changed, but The American Dream is NOT dead.
A very different American Dream is based upon an all-new American Reality:
- You may have five or more jobs in your lifetime.
- You have have several distinct careers.
- You may have more than one life partner over the span of your lifetime.
- You will have access to more knowledge than previous generations, and it will be delivered to you by way of new and exciting media.
- You will live longer.
- You will probably have to work harder.
- And, you will experience rapid change.
- As a matter of fact, you will experience more change in a shorter period of time than that of any previous generation or generations.
- And, if you’re lucky, you’ll find your “soul mate.” I did!
First, get your education!
Don’t allow that dream to fade and, in the words of Winston Churchill, “Never, never, never give up!”
You can have whatever you want in life. Just make sure it is a worthy endeavor; and then, pursue it as if your life depended on it!
If you fail, pick yourself up, brush yourself off, and begin anew.
Learn from your mistakes and begin anew.
In the words of Samuel Beckett (Irish playwright; April 13, 1906 – December 22, 1989), “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.”
With each and every failure, you come closer to success. Don’t be afraid to fail. Be afraid of not trying…or of not trying again.
Begin today. Education first. All else will follow. I promise.
Have an amazing Today, whatever day today happens to be. Have an even more amazing tomorrow. Have an even more amazing tomorrow by focusing on Today. Put enough amazing Todays together and you will have an amazing Life!
